The Book of Khalid, written in 1911, is the first Lebanese-
American novel published in the USA. The story of two boys
who immigrate to New York City from Baalbek, the book
chronicles their positive and negative experiences in this
new world and, on an autobiographical level, reflects issues
that Rihani himself experienced as he adapted to life in New
York City. These same issues are relevant today: social and
political relationships between Americans and Arabs; issues
of religious conflict in the USA, the Arab World and beyond;
and the unique situation faced by Lebanese and other Middle
Eastern immigrants in America. Todd Fine will discuss these
concepts in relation to this historic and important book and
will present the case for its relevance to our current place in
American society and beyond.

Todd Fine is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Harvard
University and holds a Master’s Degree in International
Relations from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public
Affairs at Syracuse University. He is the editor of a new critical
edition of The Book of Khalid under advance contract with
Syracuse University Press and the author of the afterword for a
paperback edition with Melville House Publishing.

At Harvard, Mr. Fine worked for Samuel P. Huntington as a
research assistant for two years on his book on American
identity and immigration, entitled Who Are We? (Simon and
Schuster, 2004)

Mr. Fine is also in charge of the “Save Washington Street”
project in New York City’s lower Manhattan area, center of the
“Little Syria” neighborhood in the early 20th Century.
